What is a Foam Roller?

Foam rollers come in all different sizes, shapes, diameters, and densities. The most commonly used tool for rolling is the classic foam roller, a cylinder shaped device made from high density foam and plastic. You can also use a lacrosse ball for rolling to help soothe those hard-reach-areas such as your feet, arms, shoulders, glutes, and hips.

 

What Does Foam Rolling Do?

            Foam rolling is becoming increasingly more popular, but what exactly does it do? Foam rolling is a form of self-myofascial release used to relieve muscle tightness and increase functionality. The pressure and deep compression of the foam roller helps to relax compromised muscles and increase blood flow to promote the growth of healthy tissue. This helps to relieve muscle soreness, increase range of motion, and prevent future injuries. The roller can also be used as a tool for stretching, increasing balance, correcting muscle imbalance, and self-acupressure.

When Should I Roll?

            The amount you foam roll and what areas to foam roll will be different for every individual based on past or current injuries, muscle tightness and soreness, and activity level. When foam rolling, it is important to listen to your body. While there will be discomfort when rolling out tight areas, avoid areas where you are experiencing sharp or severe pain. It is encouraged to visit with a health care practitioner for an assessment to be shown which muscles should be rolled, how to properly roll them, and how often. This will help prevent further injury and fast track your recovery process. It is suggested to roll your muscles before and after exercise. This will wake up your muscles, increase mobility and range of motion, and accelerate your recovery. Rolling should also be utilized between appointments to your chiropractor, physiotherapist, or massage therapist to reinforce the treatments provided by your practitioner.
